March of Dimes!

Hey Sub-region E!

Please see the information below from Service Ambassador Janice! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Hello!

Time is ticking down to the March for Babies, the largest annual fundraiser for the March of Dimes. I have heard that lots of Circle K's are participating this year, including my own! To help the members out there in preparation for the big day, I am forwarding on some information - please feel free to send this to your Sub-regions and districts!

The March of Dimes National Youth Council will be holding another March for Babies call on Monday, March 30 at 9 PM EST. There will also be an advisor call the next day at 9pm EST for Circle K advisors who wish to participate. To jump on either call, just dial: 1-800-411-7650, ext. 0820#. There will be some updates, youth-specific best practices, and a chance for questions and sharing.

For those who haven't registered yet, visit www.marchforbabies.org to set up your team. With over 900 walks taking place across the United States, there are plenty of options!

For Circle K's outside of the United States, you can join in on the celebration by fundraising and participating in advocacy and mission activities in your country. For more information on March of Dimes mission programming and how you can help, visit www.marchofdimes.com and www.marchofdimes.com/youth.

You can find additional materials and information about creating an Online Fundraising page, 'Where Your Money Goes,' March of Dimes logos and pictures, and widgets and badges for your e-mail and Facebook page at http://marchforbabies.org/spread_the_word.aspx. If you search for March of Dimes in YouTube, you'll get access to some great videos about the organization, its mission and its volunteers to share with your Circle K as well!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. A strong partnership between the Circle K and the March of Dimes will go a long way in the fight to ensure that EVERY baby is born healthy. Will you be a champion for all babies?

Better World Books

Hey Sub-region E!

I just wanted to give you a head's up about a live chat with Service Ambassador Monica and Better World Books (BWB) Partners Specialist Mary! This chat will take place on March 1st on Chatzy. Start making plans with your club to host a book drive and come to the chat with any questions you or your club might have about a book drive!

Are you wondering how to do a book drive now? Well, here's a little info about the book drives so you can talk with your club about it before the chat on March 1!

I can tell you from personal experience that book drives are really easy and can actually be fun! I was the contact for my home club when we did our book drive for BWB, and the lady who worked with me from BWB was absolutely AMAZING! She emailed me to check on us and see how everything was going. She responded to emails very quickly and was always willing to help. BWB will ship the collection boxes, posters, and the return shipping boxes to you. At Concord, we did the book drive during book buyback. We were allowed to place one of our boxes right outside of the bookstore, so students were very willing to drop off books that the bookstore wouldn't buy back. How easy was that? Extremely easy! Plus, the return shipping is covered, so your club doesn't have to pay to return the books! Once you finish the book drive, simply transfer the books from the collection boxes to the shipping boxes. Login to the Client Portal and follow the directions to print off the shipping labels. Call to schedule a pick-up and meet the delivery man (or woman) and there you go! It's pretty easy!

If you have any questions before or after the March 1 chat, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for reading and have a great day! God bless!

Dues Structure!

Hey CKI! The Kiwanis International Board did approve the dues structure change that we passed at ICON 2008. However, this change will not go into effect until 2010. Please see the message below from Director Erin Fischer regarding the change. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Erin's message:

Greetings from CKI:

The Kiwanis International board has approved the finance amendment that was proposed at the House of Delegates this summer in Denver. That amendment allows CKI to move from an individual dues structure to an annual club fee. This amendment has been outlined below. Please note that this new club fee process will not take place until the fall of 2010. Having a year and a half window will allow our International board and districts to determine next steps, and discuss implications of this new process including how to best collect district dues. It will also allow the member service staff here at the office an opportunity to work out the new collection system.

Here is the amendment as passed:
ARTICLE 21. REVENUE
Section 1. International Dues. Each Circle K club shall submit to Circle K International, or its designated fiscal agent, an annual club fee, and membership information for every member, but not including honorary members. All clubs are encouraged to send all fees via traceable means, i.e. certified mail. Clubs must submit payment by check, money order or credit card; cash will not be accepted. A club roster or fees invoice must be submitted at time of payment. Clubs that fail to follow the guidelines for club fee payments will be placed into a special handling group that will delay the processing of fees.
· Each CKI club in a nation with a per capita gross national income of US $10,000 and from a 4 year institution with an enrollment of over 1,000 students shall pay an annual fee of US $600.
· Each CKI club from a nation with a per capita gross national income of US $10,000 and from a 2-4 year institution or a 4 year institution with an enrollment of less than 1,000 students shall pay an annual fee of US $450.
· Each CKI club in a nation with a per capita gross national income of less than US$ 10,000 shall pay dues of US$300.

All club fees shall be payable during a period of at least sixty (60) days according to a schedule set forth in Circle K International Policies and defined for each nation taking into account academic calendar and financial practices of the nation. There shall be no other fees or assessments of clubs.

Section 2. Each Circle K club that is a member of a Circle K district shall pay Circle K International, or its designated fiscal agent, annual district dues or fees defined within the district’s bylaws and not exceeding the Circle K International club fee, for every member and/or club, but not including honorary members. Dues of fees shall be payable during the same period set forth for payment of the Circle K International club fees and as defined in Section 1 of this Article. There shall be no other district fees or assessments of clubs by Circle K International.

Driving Tip

I know email forwards can be extremely annoying, but I thought I would pass along this message to you about driving in the rain:

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore , Texas, she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her something that every driver should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred. The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry. The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries. If you send this to 15 to 20 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was all worth it. You might have saved a life. NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.
